El quadro è stato conducto illeso, il quale ne piace per esser ben designato et ben colorito : ma quando fusse stato finito cum magior diligentia, havendo a stare apresso quelli del Mantinea, che sono summamente netti, seria stato magiore honore vostro et più nostra satisfactione, et rincrescene che quello Lorenzo Mantovano vi dissuadesse da colorirlo ad olio : perochè noi lo desideravamo sapendo che l’era più vostra professione et di maggior vaghezza; nondimeno como havemo dicto restamo satisfacte de vui, offerendoni alli vostri piaceri sempre paratissime. Isabella d'Este writes to Perugino saying that she has taken receipt of the painting and finds it to her satisfaction even if she would have preferred had it been painted in oil rather than in tempera and that it is not comparable with the paintings of Mantegna.
